The Indians

The Indians have kicked off their season right under new head coach and athletic director, Keith Mauldin.

The Indians opened their season officially with their first game in Wink, Texas, against the Tornillo High School Coyotes on Saturday, August 26th. Even with scorching heat, the Indians showed up to play, and fans came out to support. The game ended with the Indians on top with a score of 76-6.

The next week, the Indians were on the road again. The Indians took on the Crosbyton Chiefs on Friday, September 1 on the Chiefs field heading home with a win with a score of 43-14.

The Indians’ first home game was a memorable one for those on and off the field as the Indians took home a big win over Munday with a score of 62 - 0 on Friday, September 8th. This game was their first shutout of the season, and their first shut out since their game against Tornillo in 2022. It was a sweet victory for all on the Indian’s home turf.

This is the first time the Indians have won 3 consecutive games since the 2004 season.

Coach Keith Mauldin has done a fantastic job leading the Indians this season. The entire program has shown progress, and Mauldin is not stopping any time soon.

Mauldin says that his expectations for the football program this season are to compete for a district championship. “I think we can win most, if not all of our games. We’re getting there. If you look at the progress, we really are on track to compete.”

When asked about his staff for the Indians this season, Coach Keith Mauldin says “I have a really good coaching staff. The best part is that they are good teachers.” Upon Mauldin’s arrival at Morton he stressed that success in the classroom would be just as important, if not more important than athletes success on the field. It seems natural that his new coaching staff would be excellent on the field and in the classroom.

The Indians not only have newfound success this year, but also a new motto: "Lead ‘Em Up". It is all about student athletes being leaders. Mauldin says, “I think it is a fairly good way to show what it takes to have good leadership in a program. I've used some other stuff in the past that is football specific, but I wanted something for the whole program.”

The Indians have made an incredible come back already beating last year’s total wins for the season, and are on a hot streak! They are one of fifteen teams left in the area that are undefeated coming into this week. Come out to support the Indians on as they work for another win, taking on Boys Ranch from  home this Friday, the 15th, for our Homecoming game!
